One of Greece's most famous sites. Described in one 5th century inscription as the “Jerualem of the Aegean”, it was here that St. John the Theologian was inspired to write the Book of Revelation and the monk Christodolous founded a monastery in honor of the Apostle. This holy monastery is today the most important landmark of the island. Make sure to visit the majestic monastery and its museum with extraordinary treasures. Also stop by the Cave of Apocalypse.

Majestic but also humble Monasteries, innumerable country churches scattered across the island, sandy beaches and indented coastline that shapes repeated creeks, the devoutness in the sequences of Christian feasts, the unique traditional settlement of Chora that OYNESKO included with the Cave of the Apocalypse in the Monuments of World Heritage. These are elements that altogether compose what the visitor becomes aware of as something that is a separate and unique atmosphere.
